Title: Young Adult Workforce and Development/Pre-Employment Transition Services (Pre-ETS) Counselor

The Capital District Center for Independence Inc. (commonly referred to as the Center or CDCI) is a cross-disability, not for profit community based Independent Living Center (ILC) providing non-residential service to people with disabilities (including people with intellectual, developmental, mental health and alcohol/substance abuse related disabilities), their families and service providers in the greater Capital District of New York State. For over 50 years CDCI has been using a peer model to assist people with disabilities to navigate through systems.

Responsibilities:

Prepare students with disabilities for employment, explore post- secondary education options, develop their employment related soft skills and assist in obtaining work experience. Assist students with job exploration counseling to explore career options, identify career pathways of interest, career awareness, career speakers, and career student organization. Develop and coordinate work-based learning experiences; Develop and identify businesses in the community for paid and non-paid internships / work experience, job shadowing, workplace tours and career mentorship. Provide day to day to participants which includes student recruitment. Provide counseling on opportunities for enrollment in comprehensive transition or post-secondary educational programs. Assist with workplace readiness training to develop social skills and independent living; Enhance career exploration and develop soft skills, financial literacy, job seeking skills, develop understanding of employer expectations. Perform a variety of programmatic & administrative customer-centered tasks including but not limited to marketing program to schools, outreach, tabling events, required data collection & record keeping, assisting program team with planned activities.

Qualifications:

Bachelor's Degree in Education or Human Services related field. Minimum of two (2) years of experience using non-traditional community service to engage students with disabilities in career exploration and employment. Ability to work with diverse populations including English language learners (ESL), LBGTQ, mental illness or substance abuse disorders. Bilingual in English/Spanish is a plus. Valid driver’s license and reliable transportation (employees are required to travel) a must.

Benefits/Pay:

Health, dental, vision sick, personal leave, vacation, holidays, 403(b).  Starting salary $35,000 per year

Classification/Hours:

Non-exempt, 35 hours per week
