Job Title: Disability Rights Advocate - Part-time, 21 hours per week.

Position Overview: WDOMI seeks an experienced dynamic advocate for People With Disabilities.  Focus on influencing and changing systems, including legislative systems, procedures for services, policies, and practices that benefit People with Disabilities.

Westchester Disabled on the Move Inc. (WDOMI) www.wdom.org. is a 37-year-old Independent Living Center that advocates for and assists people with disabilities. The non-residential center’s goal is to work with consumers to access the benefits and services necessary to live independently in the community. Our popular programs provide enrollment into affordable healthcare insurance and return to the community from nursing homes with assistance finding a new home with a rental subsidy.
 
Duties and Responsibilities:
  • Engage in promoting disability rights on the local, state, and federal level.
  • Educate the community, including consumers, state, and local legislators on the rights of People with Disabilities.
    • Educate and train peers and volunteer advocates on advocacy and disability rights.
    • Build coalitions of community leaders, grassroots groups, experts, and advocacy organizations to advance the rights of People with Disabilities.
    • Change systems in non-profit and for-profit companies that block the advancement and inclusion of People with Disabilities.
  • Establish short-term, annual, and long-term disability rights advocacy strategy with the Executive Director.
    • Develop, propose, and lead strategic campaigns aimed at influencing political and civic leaders primarily at the local and state levels.
    • Collaborate with staff leadership to do outreach and special events such as the annual celebration of the ADA anniversary.
    • Write, publish, and present publicly to highlight and defend disability rights.
    • Liaison to reporters, provide expert commentary on complex policy issues and solutions
  • Respond to and share statewide alerts sent by New York Association on Independent Living (NYAIL)
  • Establish and maintain community referral knowledge
  • Provides outreach to local media outlets regarding critical issues
  • Promote registration of voters with disabilities
  • Document activity and complete periodic status reports
  • Contribute as a leader to the overall development of the organization across all areas
  • Other duties as assigned by Executive Director
Qualifications:
  • Minimum of basic knowledge of policy issues impacting people with disabilities including ADA is a must.
  • Bachelor’s Degree in human services or a related field. Is preferred or an 
  • Associates in Human Services with at least three years’ experience in the field. A High School Diploma or equivalent is required.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills
  • Good social media skills – Facebook, Twitter, Instagram
  • Personal or professional experience providing services to or organizing people with disabilities is a plus.
  • Ability to relate to and work with people with disabilities.
  • Ability to work independently and to take initiative.
  • A strong knowledge of the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA), disability rights legislation, Social Security Administration, Department of Social Services, and Rehabilitation Act is required
  • Own transportation and/or ability to travel throughout Westchester County and to Albany is required.
  • The ability to speak, read and write Spanish is highly preferred, but not required.

Salary commensurate with experience. Range $22000 to $30000.
