Statewide Community Outreach Specialist - NY Association on Independent Living

The New York Association on Independent Living (NYAIL) is seeking a Statewide Community Outreach Specialist to assist the organization in conducting outreach and education activities regarding Independent Living.

NYAIL is a state-wide, non-profit organization, working with Independent Living Centers across the State to eliminate physical, communications, attitudinal, and other barriers for people with disabilities. NYAIL members are Independent Living Centers (ILCs), consumer controlled, cross-disability providers of advocacy, services and supports to people with disabilities.

 

Duties and Responsibilities: The Statewide Community Outreach Specialist will help to develop and implement outreach strategies to increase the visibility of Independent Living among the under and unserved populations as identified by the State Plan for Independent Living[i]. This individual will report to the Executive Director and work closely with NYAIL program staff and the ILC network to promote Independent Living services on a statewide basis. Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

  • Develop and implement a comprehensive and integrated marketing program focused on Independent Living to reach target audiences.
  • Develop outreach and marketing materials to promote Independent Living and the availability of long-term services and supports (LTSS) to support community living (e.g., print materials, PSAs, commercials, etc.)
  • Conduct direct outreach to statewide and regional organizations that serve communities that are identified as under and unserved per the State Plan for Independent Living.
  • Provide training and technical assistance to ILCs in their local outreach efforts to under and unserved communities.
  • Work collaboratively with the New York State Independent Living Council and ILCs to develop mechanisms for tracking impact of outreach efforts.
  • Work collaboratively with NYAIL staff, board and committees to identify strategies and priorities to help increase NYAIL presence and visibility as a disability rights organization committed to addressing social justice issues through an intersectional lens.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s Degree in relevant field preferred. Professional and life experience may be considered in lieu of, in full or part of academic credentials.
  • Previous experience developing marketing materials and conducting outreach activities.
  • Experience with the concepts of Independent Living, consumer control, and a strong commitment to promote and advocate for the full integration of individuals with disabilities.
  • Strong writing and copywriting skills, required.
  • Excellent organizational and oral communication skills.
  • Ability to work independently and to adapt to shifting priorities when necessary.
  • Comfortable with public speaking to small and large groups.
  • Ability to work collaboratively with a wide variety of stakeholders.
  • Experience with Microsoft Office Suite, required.
  • Strong working knowledge of visual design for print and web preferred, including use of applications such as Adobe InDesign and Photoshop.
  • Experience with Zoom or similar virtual meeting platforms.
  • Individuals with a diverse background and personal experience with disability strongly preferred.
  • Bilingual preferred.

 

Salary and Benefits:

NYAIL offers a competitive salary and generous benefits package. The salary for this position is in the range of $55,000 per year.

This is a grant funded position currently funded through December 2024.

 

Location and Travel:

This position requires statewide travel. Travel expenses will be reimbursed. Office work can be done remotely or in Albany. Well qualified candidates from any area in NYS should apply.
