The New York Association on Independent Living (NYAIL) has released a document outlining how Independent Living Centers (ILCs) are essential in the response to COVID-19 in New York. Core services of ILCs have become more important than ever before to keep people living independently and transitioning to living independently. Many ILCs have also added new programs and services to adapt to the needs of the community. Funding challenges are anticipated for ILCs while New York faces large budget shortfalls, but ILCs save the state money by keeping people in the community and out of life threatening congregate settings.
