SSAN Webinars

Description: Learn about an innovative model to increase activism within your center’s grassroots!

Date: 09/13/18

Author: Hosted by NYAIL, presented by Monica Bartley, Community Outreach Organizer for CIDNY who shares their model, lessons learned, and the future of the project.

Last year Center for Independence of the Disabled, NY (CIDNY) piloted a six month “Rapid Response Team.” They were women with disabilities who were employed as Peer-Advocates. The peer-advocates monitored what elected officials were doing to organize people with disabilities to take-action on disability rights issues. They were trained in advocacy skills to impact change and resistance to policies that affect people with disabilities. The mobilization of the peer-advocates fellow peers, who were interested in working systemically to improve the lives of people with disabilities, proved fruitful.

Video Description: This webinar provides details about the Disability Integration Act, a federal bill that, if passed, would create an absolute right for all people with disabilities to live in the community instead of being forced into institutional settings, such as nursing homes. Participants learn the specifics of the bill, and how this law would benefit people with disabilities by ensuring services and supports needed are provided in a person’s home.

Date: 7/10/18

Author: Hosted by NYAIL, presented by Stephanie Woodward, the Director of Advocacy for the Center for Disability Rights (CDR) and a national organizer for ADAPT. Woodward helped draft this legislation, and will offer her expertise on the bill on this highly informative webinar.
