The "Our Path Forward" theme embodies the principles of achieving diversity, equity, intersectionality, and accessibility driving the Independent Living community forward. Our Path Forward emphasizes the value of learning from today’s leaders while providing new and emerging leaders with the skills and expertise to succeed.  By joining forces and sharing our knowledge and proficiencies, we can make a real difference in the lives of people with disabilities and pave the way for a brighter future.

DAY ONE

IMANI BARBARIN
Disability Advocate, Social Media Maven, Public Speaker, Writer

Imani Barbarin standing with "walking/mobility" cane in front of beautiful ivy backdropImani Barbarin is a disability rights and inclusion activist and speaker who uses her voice and social media platforms to create conversations engaging the disability community. Born with cerebral palsy, Imani often writes and uses her platform to speak from the perspective of a disabled black woman. In the last few years she has created over a dozen trending hashtags that allow disabled folk the opportunity to have their perspectives heard while forcing the world to take notice. 

Imani is from the Philadelphia area and holds a Masters in Global Communications from the American University of Paris, her published works include those in Forbes, Rewire, Healthline, BitchMedia and more. She runs the blog CrutchesAndSpice.com and a podcast of the same name.

“Our Path Forward” emphasizes the value of learning from founding leaders of the Independent Living movement while providing emerging leaders with the skills and expertise to succeed. This panel will be a facilitated discussion with founding Directors in New York, addressing the history, current challenges, and future of our movement.
